Camagüey,Cuba

Camagüey, located in central Cuba, is a vibrant and historic city known for its urban layout, rich cultural heritage and its friendly, welcoming people. I was fortunate to travel with Jennifer Spelman, accomplished documentary photographer of Cuba, to Camagüey and its surrounding rural provinces to experience and capture the spirit of the people and their culture.

Street Scenes

The street scene in Camagüey is a captivating blend of history, culture, and daily life. The city's historic center is a maze of narrow, winding streets and alleys from centuries ago, which creates a unique and charming urban layout. Well-preserved colonial architecture, with colorful buildings, wrought-iron balconies, and wooden shutters adds to the city's visual appeal.

In the streets, locals go about their daily routines, often engaging in lively conversations or tending to small shops and businesses while children play. Camagüey is known for its bustling markets, where you can find a wide array of goods, from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The city's residents, known for their warm hospitality, often greet visitors with smiles and friendly exchanges.

The People

Camagüeyans have a diverse cultural heritage rooted in the fusion of Spanish, African, and indigenous influences. They are characterized by their warm and welcoming nature, reflecting the hospitality of the province. We were hosted by Camagüeyans in their homes, farms, neighborhoods and work places as they celebrated birthdays, American-Cuban cultural exchange and family feasts. In a country where the average monthly income is 25 US dollars, we were welcomed with the family’s favorite foods and finest rum. On the street the locals invited us into their homes to see their possessions and to share how they lived; in their homes and on the street they were often thoughtful and reflective and sometimes somber in mood and gaze. Camagüeyans are known for their strong sense of community making it a delightful place to experience Cuban culture.

Ballet Contemporáneo de Camagüey

The Ballet Contemporáneo de Camagüey presents a diverse repertoire that incorporates elements of modern and contemporary dance, blending traditional techniques with new artistic expressions. Their performances are often emotive and avant-garde, exploring various themes through the language of dance. We were pleased to visit and photograph their rehearsal by way of natural light streaming through the windows. We enjoyed interacting with the dancers and exchanging social media accounts. What a delightful and talented group of young professionals.
